Paul Joseph Isbell was born November 18, 1919 in Flora Vista, New Mexico. He moved to Texas at an early age and graduated from De Leon High School. Paul attended Howard Payne College for one year before going into the service with the Coast Guard from 1942 until 1945. He then transferred to the Naval Reserve and served from 1954 until retirement as a Chief Petty Officer in 1977. Mr. Isbell returned to Howard Payne College and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degrees. He also earned a Master of Arts degree from Hardin Simmons University. His teaching career began at Early High School in 1947. After two years he moved to West Texas, then returned to Early for an additional two years. In 1950 he transferred to the Brownwood Public School system and taught until his retirement. Paul officiated at baseball, basketball, and football games in Brownwood and the surrounding communities for many years during his teaching career, and even continued for several years after his retirement. He taught AARP defensive driving classes and was the coordinator for scheduling classes for many years. He was also active in his service as a Gideon, spreading the Word of God to many people, and was active until the time of his death. He was a member of Early First Baptist Church. Since Mr. Isbell’s illness he came to live with, be loved and cared for by his grandson Brian Ferguson and his wife Teresa, great grandson’s Hunter Ferguson, Kelton Darden and daughter Dorothy Ferguson. Paul is survived by his wife Jimmie Louise Isbell, four daughters Shirley and Sandy of Maryland, Donna Arnett and husband Ron of Austin , Dorothy Ferguson of Brownwood, and two sons; William Paul Isbell and wife Sharon and their children Nicole and Paul of Bel Air, Maryland, Joseph Livingston Isbell and wife Kathy and son Jarrett Isbell of Brownwood, daughter-in-law Diane Lee of Ft Worth. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph Livingston Isbell and mother Etta Upchurch Isbell, son Jimmy Eugene Lee, two sisters and four brothers. Paul also wanted to acknowledge and appreciate all the staff at Gentiva Hospice, Dr. Chris Stephens and staff for wonderful care, all the staff and friends at Senior Citizens, Tammy and Alvis Eoff for the love and friendship and all the wonderful goodies Tammy always made for him and his long time friends John and Linda Brown.
